Lights Out:
Formula E has officially achieved B Corp Certification, establishing itself as the world’s first sport to earn this prestigious status. Announced at the World Economic Forum in Davos, this certification solidifies the all-electric series’ commitment to sustainable innovation and using sport as a catalyst for positive global change.
Attack Mode:
This certification is a powerful declaration, signaling Formula E’s intent to redefine what modern sport can be. It codifies the series’ mission to ‘Make Progress Thrilling,’ challenging an industry traditionally focused on spectacle to prioritize systemic impact while demonstrating that elite performance and environmental responsibility are not mutually exclusive.
Telemetry Data:
- Global Benchmark: Formula E is the first sport worldwide to achieve B Corp certification, joining a community of purpose-driven brands like Patagonia and Ben & Jerry’s.
- Impact Criteria: Certification recognizes strong social and environmental standards at race events, meaningful contributions to local communities, best-practice worker wellbeing strategies, and the company’s commitment to transparency and accountability.
- Sustainable Innovation: The recent GEN4 car launch highlighted 100% recyclable construction and 20% recycled materials, proving sustainable engineering doesn’t compromise 200mph elite speed.
- Operational Excellence: The current 12th season features a calendar grouped by continent, significantly reducing freight mileage and CO₂ emissions.
Team Radio:
Jeff Dodds, CEO, Formula E: “We didn’t set out to join a club; we set out to break the rules of what a global sport is allowed to be. B Corp Certification is the proof that we are driven by a different energy, one where elite performance and world-moving purpose belong in the same story. This isn’t a milestone to celebrate standing still; it’s a license to go even faster.”
Julia Pallé, VP Sustainability, Formula E: “Becoming B Corp certified is a powerful recognition that electric racing can do more than inspire, it can drive real, measurable change. Formula E has always focused on impact – not just pledges supporting charities or carbon reduction.”
Chris Turner, CEO, B Lab UK: “Welcoming Formula E to the B Corp community marks an exciting milestone for the entire sports industry…recognises that success and purpose have never been mutually exclusive.”
Grid Position:
Formula E was founded with the explicit goal of combating climate change by accelerating electric vehicle adoption and low-carbon mobility. The series operates as a vital test bed for innovative EV technology, facilitating knowledge transfer to the manufacturing industry. It previously earned Net Zero Pathway certification from BSI, set Science Based Targets, and has reduced its Scope 1 & 2 emissions by 55% since 2019.
